Renaming and editing an item

Rename an item and update the details captured on its form.

A name and its details are set when something is created, but sites get renamed and details need updating. You can change anything in the directory in place from the Directory page, without recreating it or affecting the entries already logged against it.

Opening the edit form

Editing starts from the same actions menu you use for everything else. From the Directory page, find what you want to change, then:

  1. Hover over the card, or select it, to reveal its actions button. You can also right-click the card body to open the same menu.
  2. Choose Edit from the menu.
  3. The edit form opens over the page — titled for the kind of thing you are editing, "Edit Site", say — pre-filled with the current details.

The menu also holds the other things you can do — opening the page, adding beneath it, and (if your role allows) managing who can see it. Editing sits alongside those.

The Edit option only appears if your role lets you change the directory's structure. If you do not see it, someone with the right permission will need to make the change. See roles and permissions for how access is decided.

What you can change

The edit form controls the item itself — not the entries logged against it. Those stay exactly as they were.

  • Name. The Name field is the change you will make most often. Type the name you want; it cannot be left blank. This is the label shown wherever the item appears in the tree, in lists, and in breadcrumbs.
  • Category. The Category is shown for reference but cannot be changed here. It is fixed when the item is added and reflects where it sits in the tree.
  • Details. Depending on how your organisation has set things up, the form may also let you choose the form used for entries logged here and fill in the item's own details. These come from your organisation's forms, so the fields you see vary from one item to the next.

When the details are right, choose Save Changes to apply them. The change shows immediately across every view. Choose Cancel to close the form and leave everything untouched.
